It appears that I am unable to open files in
Word/Powerpoint/and excel but the files still exist and I
can open them via Wordpad, any ideas??

How are you trying to open them? Double-click or File>Open?

Do you also use Norton AV? If so then go to Norton Options and in the
Miscellaneous section disable the "Office Plug-in" option and see if
that rectifies the problem.
