To remove Office 97 you need your install media and it will show that it is installing first then it will change and go into the uninstall. It was perfectly normal that it seemed like you describe

I did not explain myself very well. I do not have the software for office97. I want to find out how to get office 97 off this computer when I don't own the install software.
Thank you for your time

I'm guessing it was a hand-me-down computer or a bootleg copy.

So how did it get ON the computer in the first place?

Now we are way out there. my computer has windows xp. After logging on I went to control panel, add/remove software, microsoft office 97, remove. Desplay says must have software. I don,t have any software for office 97 or xp. I was given this computer with no software, so I can't uninstall office 97. boy this is getting hard. Thanks for your time. PS did I mention I'm not a computer guy?oh! that obvious.

Then you need to go back to the person from whom you received the computer and request the disks. Any computer that has anything Microsoft on it must also have the disks transferred along with the computer.

It sounds as though someone may have deleted the Office 97 files but not properly uninstalled it
before giving you the computer. Something left over in the registry is telling Windows that Office
97 is still installed where in fact it's apparently not.

You don't have Office 97 or want it, is that right?

If so, the simplest thing to do may be to kinda close your eyes every time you scroll past the entry
in Add/Remove programs. Ignore it, in other words, if it's doing no harm.

If just bugs you, try the Office 97 registry cleaner to get rid of the residue:
