Actually it is CTRL+SHIFT+8
The * symbol is not above the 8 on all keyboards and it actually wants the 8
key and not the * key.

Yes, when you are on a US International keyboard the * is above the 8. Then
you are correct.
For a German keyboard layout the * is above the 3 and not above the 8. Many
other keyboard layouts have the ( above the 8.
CTRL+SHIFT+* doesn't work for other keyboard layouts. CTRL+SHIFT+8 is the
correct key combination to toggle it no matter what your keyboard layout is.
