Microsoft Project Standard 2003 addition problems

I am unable to get a column to add the sum total at the bottom. I go into
Tools/customize/Fields, then click formula, but just can't seem to figure out
how to add the total of the column.
I am familiar with excell, and have tried to use the formula for addition,
but it will not work.
I just need help in finding a simple solution to adding a column total that
already exists.

You need to use either a summary task or a group outline to create a "total"
row in the chart. Then the fields will sum to this task. If you are seeking a
grand total for the entire project have a project Summary task at the first
row an then all tasks are to be "indented" beneath this.
perhaps you need to run through the tutorial under the help menu to
familiarise yourself with Project?
