Is Microsoft SQL Server 2005 a part of Office? If not, now could it have
gotten installed on someone's system? Is it necessary? If not, is it safe to
remove it?

No, it's not a part of office. It is an expensive program that would have
been installed.
It's necessary if they are doing sql server work.

That's pretty much what I thought. Could it have been installed along with
"Microsoft Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition"?

SQL Server 2005 is not a part of MS Office.
MS does, however, offer a free, downloadable version:
"Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition (SQL Server Express) is a free,
redistributable version of SQL Server 2005 that you can now download from
the SQL Server Web site. The SQL Server Express download provides users with
the right to install and use SQL Server Express with your applications or
development projects."
