Microsoft Visual Basic error

B

Boblink

Hi, I get the following error message when I open Word (OfficeXp):

Microsoft Visual Basic: The macros in this project are disabled. Please
refer to the on line help or documentation of the host applicatiosn how to
enable macros

The last program that I installed was WinFax 10.02 so I assume that there is
some kind of incompatiablity issue between the two programs and would
appreciate your help how to fix this problem? Thanks, Bob

According to the Symantec site you reach from that link,

"Using Windows Explorer, locate and delete the existing macro file and
then choose not to use macros with WinFax. The macro file is
Wfword2k.dot and is located in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\Office\Startup folder."

However, the Symantec article is really about a more serious error,
where Word crashes immediately on startup. Your problem should be
easier to solve. The message is caused when you have your macro
security level set to High, so Word won't trust macros from templates
stored in folders that aren't "trusted locations". Because of a stupid
mistake by Microsoft, the folder C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\Office\Startup is not trusted.

To fix this, first go to Word's menu Tools > Macro > Security, click
the Trusted Publishers tab, and check the box for "Trust all installed
add-ins and templates".

Now close Word and open Windows Explorer (the file manager, not the
Internet browser). Go to Tools > Folder Options > View and make sure
"Show hidden folders and files" is selected, and click OK.

Go to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Startup and CUT the
Wfword2k.dot to the clipboard (you don't want it to remain there!).
Now find the folder C:\Documents and Settings\<your name>\Application
Data\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP, and paste the file there. (In this path,
<your name> represents your login name in Windows.)

Start Word. You shouldn't see the message. If you still see the
message, delete Wfword2k.dot completely -- you won't be able to use
Winfax directly through the macros, but you can still select it in the
Print dialog.

I have the same problem as Bob. Jay says:

There was no Wfword2k.dot file there.
Now find the folder C:\Documents and Settings\<your name>\Application
Data\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP, and paste the file there. (In this path,
<your name> represents your login name in Windows.)
I went here - the directory was empty.

I still get the message when opening Word: "Micorsoft Visual Basic: The
macros in this prject are disabled. Please refer to the online help or
documentation of the host applications on how to enable macros."

I can't find that file. I did a Google desktop search for it and it came up
blank, too.

Thanks for any help, Jay - or anyone out there!

Since I don't have WinFax myself, I'm not sure what the file's name
is. I'm guessing that if it isn't WfWord2k.dot (which, since "2k"
stands for 2000, would be kind of old), it might at least start with
WfW.

It also may not be a .dot file. See these articles for help in finding
other kinds of add-ins:

No luck. I deleted everything - in both startups (under office and office11)
except FontList.dot and ThesMenu.dot. I also went into NOrton Antivirus and
cleared "Enable office plug-in." The message goes away when in Word I
unselect "trust all installed add-ins and templates" but then I have to
accept several macros individually - not a big help!

Any more ideas?????

Thanks,
Char

??? The "macros are disabled" message GOES AWAY when you UNCHECK the
trust installed add-ins box?? That's completely backwards. That
message APPEARS when you have macros in an add-in/template and the box
is unchecked -- because you've told Word to NOT trust add-ins.

Or are you getting some message that's different from "The macros in
this project are disabled"?

Also, did you follow the links I gave to the articles about checking
for add-ins that are not .dot files?

Correction - unchecking "trust installed add-ins" only caused me to have to
accept one-by-one several macros on opening Word. Once that process stopped,
the "macros are disabled" prompt reappeared on opening.

I went to those sites - that's why I unchecked Norton's plug-in. But there's
nothing left in my STARTUP except fonts and thesaurus. I deleted the other
two files I found there.

All this began when I upgraded to Office small business 2003.

Please help!

What makes you think the macros are not coming from FontList.dot and
ThesMenu.dot? I don't recognize either of these add-ins. If they are in
Word's Startup folder, they should not cause problems if you check the box
to "Trust all installed templates and add-ins." If they are in the Office
Startup folder, they will still cause problems.
