microsoft word 2000 will not let me save a file

microsoft word will not let me save a file, everytime i click the file button
it freezes up and gives me an error box and shuts down. I lose all of my
homework. It just recently started doing this, can somebody help me? please

What I had to do was rename the Normal.dot template. That took care of it.
