Microsoft Word as Outlook Email editor problem.

I am running Office XP and I will have a word doc. open and then I will see I
have an email. I will open the email (doesn't have an attachment on it) and
then I will reply back to the Email. Sometimes when I reply I notice it
shuts my Word doc. I had opened. I need to go back and reopen my Word doc.
Can anybody tell me why this is happening? I do not want to lose work.
