Microsoft Word Error Report

When I open Microsoft Word and begin typing I get an error
report saying "Word has encountered a problem and needs to
be closed". It might be a macro virus, but I'm not sure
what to do and not sure exaclty what the problem is. Any
Suggestions??

Create a new Normal.dot file and rename the old one
Normal.old and try and start word again.

Windows XP and Microsoft Office 2000, this problem is a
recent problem that has never happened before (I have had
this computer for 6 months or so)
