Microsoft Word Filenames

I opened a Word document and made some changes to it.
When I went to "save as" I renamed the file by only
changing the last number of the previous filename. The
two filenames are exactly the same # of characters but
when I click save on the new file it tells me the filename
is too long. Any ideas on what may cause this?

Just guessing because I don't know what name you are using (plus I'm not
an expert, like so many in this ng), but;

are you saving it to the same directory, i.e.. if it so happens that you
are saving it to a different directory and the full path of that
directory plus the filename is > 255 characters then you'll get an error
(see the following excerpt from Word (2k) help).

"To make it easier to find documents, you can use long, descriptive file
names. The complete path to the file, including the drive letter, server
name, folder path, and file name and extension can contain up to 255
characters. File names cannot include any of the following characters:
forward slash (/), backslash (\), greater than sign (>), less than sign
(<), asterisk (*), question mark (?), quotation mark ("), pipe symbol
(|), colon :)), or semicolon (;)."

HTH.
