Microsoft Word Outline Improvements and Appendices Provision

J

james edgar murphy

Microsoft Word should make a fully-dedicated provision for appendices,
enabling a document to have one outline structure for the main document and
another for the appendices, both displayable within the Table of Contents...
RATHER THAN having a work-around, using Heading 7 of the main outline
structure as the first level of the Appendices. Doing so creates a subtle
problem: Heading 7 is still subordinate to Headings 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1,
which sometimes comes back to haunt the author.

Microsoft Word should also handle outline formats better, enabling users to
name & save custom outline formats. Presently, when something goes awry with
an outline style, the Bullets and Numbering dialog box shown to the user
provides no real clear indication as to which format is being used,
especially if all seven style boxes have been edited to look similar to one
another. Being able to name & save a custom outline format would help.

Word Heretic

G'day james edgar murphy <james edgar
(e-mail address removed)>,

They do. It is called the Outline Level of the Style. That is, Heading
1 comes defined as Outline Level 1. I then define style Appendix to be
at Outline Level 1. I then use a TOC that looks for outline levels 1 -
3. Simple. Done. Alreafy there. Your suggestion is a complete waste of
bug-reporting space. Why didn't you ask us first?
