Microsoft WORD problem (with Excel object)

Hi,

On Dell Machine ( XP op-sys) with Office XP I run a WORD document.
This document has, embedded in it, both Excel spreadsheets
and Visio drawings.

When I'm trying to edit these I'm getting the following:
"This object is corrupted or is not longer available"

1. This WORD document works fin on other computers I have.
2. It uses to work fine on this machine.

The only thing I tried was to:

Control Panel >Add/remove programs>Microsoft Office / Change >repair.
It didn't work.

Any advice?
Thanks,
Uzi

This is usually caused by the Office plug-in for Norton AntiVirus, which you
can disable without compromising your virus protection provided you leave
Auto-Protect enabled. See “You receive a "File is not available" error
message when you try to open an Office 2003 document” at
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=835404

If it isn't NAV, it could be another add-in, but another things to check is
to make sure that you don't have Excel set to "Ignore other applications."

Thanks, Suzanne,

As the problem was both on Excel and Visio,
I could not see me changing both.

I reinstalled Office XP (Uninstalled & Installed)
Works fine, now with both Excel and Visio.
(I did not reinstalled Visio, I didn't touch it)

My hesitation is, now - should I update (from the Internet) or not?

Thanks

Hi Suzanne,

I "dared" and let Microsoft update the newly reinstalled Office.
Does not work, now.

So, I can reinstall and "reject" any updates,
or,
How can I "tell" Excel not to "Ignore other applications."?
(and the same to Visio, I imagine)

Thanks,

In Excel, the setting is on the General tab of Tools | Options, but this may
well not be the issue. IIRC, there was a specific update that "broke" Word
in a number of ways. Supposedly they fixed it, and I can't now remember
whether I ever got Word working with the "fixed" update or left it
uninstalled. The patch in question was KB908531, and there's info in
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=918165, but I don't believe this is
relevant to your issue (had to do with HP printers/scanners).

I don't find any KB hits for your specific error message (even if I correct
it to "This object is corrupted or is no longer available"). If I search for
just "This object is corrupted," I get a lot of KB articles that don't seem
to contain this text. <sigh>

Do you have the Open and Repair option in Word 2002?

Hi,

I didn't want to give up on the update so I removed Norton.
It worked!
I installed the (free) AVG antivirus - still work.
Good bye Norton.

Just disabling the plug-in should have done the trick, though. What I didn't
catch was that you actually had Norton and thought it wasn't implicated
because you'd had it for quite some time. Both Microsoft and Symantec
updates are constantly finding new ways to break Word when the Norton Office
Plug-in is enabled.

When I installed AVG, I elected "custom" which allowed me
*not* to install the Office Plug-in.
The idea to do so came from you.
It was in the link in your first response.
So, as they say "I couldn't have done it without you"
