Microsoft Word won't allow me to change margins

When I try to change margins under "page setup" I always get an error message
that says, "Settings you chose for the left & right margins, column spacing
or paragraph indents are too large for the page width in some sections." I
don't understand this. My printer will accept any size margin. Also, there
are no "preview" lines in portrait orientation in "page setup." I finally got
that to work but now I just cannot fix this problem. The first problem was
getting Word to automatically paginate. Perhaps I messed something up.
Please help.

Does this occur in only one particular document? If yes, then
open the document, and click on Format | Columns | One | Apply
to: Whole document | OK. Even if "One" already appears to be
selected, click on it anyway.

Or does this occur in all new documents? If yes, then locate and
open your Normal.dot file as described in Method 1 in
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/BlankDocNotBlank.htm . Click
on Format | Columns | One | Apply to: Whole document | OK. Even
if "One" already appears to be selected, click on it anyway.
Type a character or two and delete what you just typed. Save the
Normal.dot file and close it.

Thanks, Garfield. I am running Windows XP Professional and the Normal.dot
file WASN'T a hidden folder as was stated in the literature you linkedme to.
There were two folders: Normal and ~$Normal. I opened both (with right
click) got only another blank document. Shouldn't these files, indeed, be
hidden?? I installed Microsoft Office Professional a couple of weeks ago and
this computer is only a couple of months old. However, an IT person with the
co. I purchased this computer from took remote control of it to fix a certain
problem. He said he needed to delete, rename and move several files and
folders around. Now, am I screwed or what?? Thank you very much.

Sorry, I forgot part of the last post: I can't find "normal.dot" ANYWHERE.
I am hesitant to "create a new Normal.dot from scratch." I am of the
impression that Office Professional works very well.

I'm sorry. I forgot to tell you that I can't find "Normal.dot" ANYWHERE and
that I hesitate to "create a new Normal.dot from scratch." I understood
Office Professional to be a superior product
