I can't open Microsoft Word .The following messages appear
1.Installer patch package is missing
2.Microsoft Word can't open the end user agreement this
feature is not currently installed.
3.Microsoft Word cannot install the necessary files due
to Windows installer error 1635.

These problems occured after i was directed to the
Microsoft Office web site where my computer was scanned
and security updates for Microsoft Office were found to
exist and were downloaded .

Version of Microsoft Word 2000 SR-1
Operating system -Windows XP Home Edition with Service
Pack 1

I tried to uninstall and reinstall Microsoft Word and
could not.
Thanks ,any help that you can offer would be appreciated .

When you say you "were directed to the Microsoft Office web site", how
were you so directed? Did you receive an email announcing the latest
Microsoft patch/upgrade/update?

.I was using internet explorer and there was something
that I wanted to save in Word ,I clicked on the Word
symbol at the top of the tool bar and when I did the
following message came up .There have been security
updates to your version of Microsoft Office would you
like to update and I cliked on yes ,It went to the
MicrosoftOffice site where it scanned my my computer for
Office updates . There were several that were recomended
to be installed ,they were downloaded and installed and
since then when I try to open Word it keeps asking for a
patch package. It tells me that this patch package could
not be opened ,verify that the patch package exists and
that you have access to it .It also states that Microsoft
Word can't open the end user license agreement.
The update was as follows
1.Office update v3
2.Source MsiInstaller
3.Catergory None
4.Information, Event ID. 11728

I'm thinking you might have installed a virus instead of an update. Are
you running any kind of antivirus software? When you clicked on the
Word icon, do you know the URL of the site to where you were redirected?
If you have Microsoft Excel, open it and click on Help | About
Microsoft Excel... the first line in the window should say something
like Microsoft Excel 2000 (9.xxxx.xxxx) SPx where the x's are numbers...
what does yours say?

This is not a virus ,In addition to the above ,when i
select help from the drop down menue the following
message comes up .
Microsoft Word can't display help. Microsoft Word cannot
install the necessary files due to Windows installer
error 1635.
When I try to open any function of Microsoft Word ,the
following box opens. Windows installer preparing to
install .

This error indicates the patch package for your Office installation is
missing or corrupt. This can be caused by several things but to
correct it you will need to zap the Windows Installer entry in the
Registry and reinstall Office.

Obtain the following utility and use it to remove only the reference
to Office. Once that is complete then you'll need to reinstall Office
to point the Windows Installer to your installation CD:
