Click on the toolbar button that looks like a Paragraph mark. However, I
think you'll find that those items help. With proportional fonts it is
sometimes very difficult on the screen to tell if you have one space or two
between two characters. Also, it show you if you have a breaking or
non-breaking space, the same thing for hyphens. There are also advantages to
the paragraph mark showing, since that is where the paragraphs formatting
is. If you highlight the end of a paragraph, but leave the paragraph mark
out of the highlight, you will only delete the highlighted text. If you also
highlight the paragraph mark, then you merge the paragraph with the one
below it. This works this way whether you have the characters showing or
not, but if they're not showing you can't tell.
