Migrate from PC Outlook to Entourage

Hi Everybody,

I'm new to mac and Entourage. We have Exchange 2003 and Outlook
clients. We need to migrate some PC to iMac form the Graphic
Department. I was tested on a iMac and can connect to Exchange 2003
server successfully by using Entourage 2004.

Our current PC client was using outlook 2000 and has some local
archived pst files. I know there has some tools can convert pst file
into Entourage. But I want to ask some following questions.

1. In Entourage, the email messages is downloaded into local database
or keep into server? or both?

2. If I converted a pst file into Entourage, it will store into local
database only? or both server and local db?

3. Is Entourage has archiving feature just like outlook? And can access
the archived messages anytime? (not import back to db). If yes, is it
will remove messages from the server side?

Thanks.

Both.

You have the option, in an Entourage account, to download the full message
or just the message headers. However, first time you try to view the
message, it will be downloaded fully. From that point on, it is in your
local database as well as on the server, so the messages remain accessible,
even when the server is offline.
2. If I converted a pst file into Entourage, it will store into local
database only? or both server and local db?

There are no direct tools for accessing PST files created in Outlook 2003 -
the only converter is for the mac version of outlook 2000. I don't know if
this will work for the windows version of outlook 2000 PST files. The
converter is a free download from the MS web site, so give it a try.
3. Is Entourage has archiving feature just like outlook? And can access
the archived messages anytime? (not import back to db). If yes, is it
will remove messages from the server side?

There is no direct archiving built in to Entourage. However, you can drag
individual messages out to create a local file, or whole mail folders to
create a MBOX file. These can be opened again in entourage, or read with any
text editor.

Thank you very much Barry, I will try it more before deploy it to the
users. Personally, I feel Outlook 2001 for mac was better than
Entourage.

If you're accustomed to Outlook, Entourage may seem very alien. In time and
with use, you may find it to be very rich in function and - in many ways -
superior to Outlook. I switched years ago and hope I never have to go back.

If there are specific features you miss from Outlook, be sure to let
Microsoft know so that they can be considered for future versions of
Entourage.
