Migration path from Entourage 2008 to Entourage 2008 EWS

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Processor: Intel Email Client: Exchange We are currently using Exchange 2003 and Entourage 2008. We will be moving mailboxes to exchange 2010 in the near future. If I am correct, installing Entourage EWS while a mailbox is on Exchange 2003 will cause entourage to stop functioning. However, Entourage (non EWS) will not work with Exchange 2010 because there is no web dev functionality. So it sounds like there will be no smooth way to transition entourage clients to Exchange 2010 on a large scale. Does anyone else have any advice on how to make this transition for 500+ entourage users?

Just a little background info that might help...

When you install EWS, it will asks you to import from another Identity. This
is the only time, Entourage can import from Entourage 2008 as an entire
Identity. An EWS Identity cannot even see in the choices a v12 Identity when
you use Switch Identity.

Once you get the new server up and running. Install EWS by downloading the
current EWS updater. Currently it's 13.0.3. This will install over any
Entourage Identity that's 12.2.1 or higher. You should be able to import the
old Identity at this time.

The Exchange gurus will be able to help with the system wide transition.

I understand how the identity upgrade works. The problem I have is that EWS cannot be "pre installed" on clients connecting to Exchange 2003. Therefore, each client needs to be taken offline, upgraded and then stay offline for a few hours while the mailbox is moved to exchange 2010. Then if there was any issue on 2010, office would have to be reinstalled before the mailbox could be moved back to exchange 2003. Is it really this bad or is there some better migration scenario? I find it puzzling why EWS isn't a feature that can be turned on and off in entourage rather than a complete reinstall.

I'll see what I can find out and get back.

We recently went through an Exchange Server 2003 to 2007 upgrade, which
made this easier for us because 2007 supports both protocols.

Because you're going from 2003 to 2010, you'll have no choice but to
change clients at the same time you move mailboxes. Keep in mind that
Outlook Web Access (OWA) in 2010 is greatly improved and now works
equally across browsers and platforms. You could move mailboxes and
instruct users to temporarily use OWA while you work to get their
Entourage software updated.

The only other solution would be to temporarily set up a 2007 server,
migrate to that and then to 2010. It would be extra effort on the
backend but less disruption to users. This, in my opinion, would only
spread the pain over a longer time period instead of yanking the bandage
off all at once.

While Entourage 12.x and 13.x (EWS) may look the same on the surface,
they are not using the same schema in their local Databases and,
therefore, data stored there is only compatible with either WebDAV or
EWS, not both. That's why Microsoft has two apps instead of one that can
toggle between the two.

Hope this helps!
