Missing emails in a PST

One of my users has a very large PST file that was
recently backed up, however, when opening the PST file,
most of the messages that were archived are missing,
though the size of the PST would indicate that they are
there somewhere....?

Has anyone else seen this before, or found a way to fix it?

What version of Outlook, what method of backup, and what method of trying to
get the mesasges back into Outlook?
