Missing file - saving data from word forms

D

Daguerrotype

I am trying to save data from some Word 2002 [aka Word XP] online form
documents.

In 'Options'. I have ticked the 'Save data only for forms' button, and then
clicked the File Menu 'Save Copy as' and a text filename prompt opens which I
selected to save - and closed again - but NO TEXT FILE is saved??!!!

I have double checked the full path & filename - it should be in the same
directory as the original file I am extracting from.

I have tried on two diffferent PCs and with 2 versions of the form document.

I am stumped - ANY ideas would be appreciated

Thanks

What is your "Files of type" setting in the File Open dialog? If it's Word
Documents or All Word Documents, you won't see .txt files.

Thanks Suzanne - I looked for it in a 'Explorer' window - with no file
filtering on - so would be visible - but a good point generally when using
open & save in Office apps

Hi Suzanne & all

I have just got it to work normally on a small test form document - so I
looked at my real data docs - They had a preamble and the n the data was
embedded in a number of tables. I deleted the preamble page and left the
tables - inclduing coumn headers and formatting etc. Then it worked . Looks
like it might be a bug in Word

Other comments welcome

Interesting. I've never tried using this feature, so your guess is as good
as mine.

How does one pass on details of a possible bug to MS - all I get is the
support guys and a request for payment if I want to email them!!!

It would also help if we had a sample of the document that exhibits
the behavior.

If you want to email an example to me I'd be happy to take a look at
it and pass it along with additional details that may be necessary to
help pinpoint the precise problem. My email address is

Thanks for the sample document. :)

I did find the cause of the problem: on the first page you have a
FormDropDown that is not viewable on the screen nor is it recognized
as a Drop Down field from the Forms toolbar. I suspect it was created
manually such as by pressing Ctrl + F9 to create a Word field and
typing "FormDropDown" inside the field braces.

If you unprotect the document and press Alt + F9 to toggle the field
codes you will see it. Once you delete the field then the 'save data'
option will work as expected.

Additionally, the document is also being tracked for changes. I'm not
sure if you turned this on deliberately but if you want to turn off
Track Changes then double-click the bold "TRK" in the status bar when
the document is unprotected to turn it off.

I really can't say this is a bug since I'm not sure how the
FormDropDown was created.

Hello Beth,

I have the same problem in my newly installed Word 2007 with a form that
worked perfect together with Word XP and Word 2003.

(I'm not sure that I use the correct English command names because I use a
Swedish version)

I tick the 'Save data only for forms' button in the Word-options menu under
Advanced, and then clicked Save and a text filename prompt opens (showing the
data that will be saved to the text file) which I selected to save.

Nothing happend...

I do not know what to do. I've investigated the form as you describe above,
but I don't find any hidden fields. I use FormDropDown, but as I told you, It
has worked together with two earlier Word versions...

I've runned out of ideas about this...

Tanks Jonas
