Missing Macros

B

BradE

I have MSP Pro 2003 SP2 running on a 2GB Windows XP SP2 machine. I
have created and run a simple archive macro (FileOpen ReadOnly, Save,
Close) for a number of months.

Monday I came into work and all of my macros are missing - the ones I
wrote and the default ones provided during installation. I have tried
to recreate the macro by re-recording the macro and although it
appears to have worked, no macro is saved. I have tried that using
all levels of Macro Security settings.

Any ideas what could be causing it and how to repair it? Many thanks
in advance! .... Brad

PS - This is a great site

It sounds like something may have happened to your Global.mpt file.
Try Tools/Organizer... Select the Modules tab, and you should be able to
copy to/from the Global file.

Thanks. Unfortunately, there are no entries in the Modules section
for my MSP installation. I have found two copies of GLOBAL.MPT.

The first is in C:/Program Files/Microsoft Office/OFFICE11/1033, but
by it's date (8/16/2003), it appears to be the original file provided
during installation and not one that has been used. This was found
using Windwos Explorer SEARCH for GLOBAL.MPT.

The second is in C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data
\Microsoft\MS Project\11\1033 - it has the current date and time and
is over 2MB in size - but it doesn't show during a Windows Explorer
SEARCH function and doesn't show is the MSP Organizer.

This is quite a puzzle to me. Any additional thoughts? Thank
you! .... Brad

BradE,
The second instance of the Global is the active Global file and it is
the one that will contain all the customized views, filters, modules,
etc. that you have created since you first installed Project.
Unfortunately, sometimes the active Global gets corrupted and that
sounds like what has happened to you. Unless you have done periodic
backups of your active Global, you may have lost some or all of your
customized settings.

From Project, go to the Organizer and look at several of the tabs. If
you see some of the custom items you created (e.g. Brad view, xyz
filter, etc.) you may be able to recover those items. Open a blank file
and use the Organizer to transfer whatever custom items you can to that
file. Save that file and close Project. Go to the location of your
active Global and trash it. Don't worry, Project will create a new
default Global when you restart Project. Once Project is running again,
use the Organizer to transfer the saved custom settings from the file
you created earlier.

To periodically back up the active Global this is what I do. Go to the
location of the active Global on your "C:" drive and copy it to another
backup location. A good choice might be removable media. Then if your
active Global ever becomes corrupt, you can simply replace it with your
backup. You will lose any custom information since your last backup, but
that is better than having to start over from scratch.

Hope this helps.

Your phrase "Unless you have done periodic backups of your active
Global" reminded me that this client has a silent full-backup program
running daily. It took a few tries but I finally found a good copy on
backup. So thank you for that.

But better yet, I learned that I need to include this little file (and
possibly other MS "little files") in my home PC backups.

Thank you again and have a great day! ..... Brad

Further, if you have customized views, etc, in other projects, you can open
these and then copy those customizations to your new global from the
organizer.

Brad,
You're welcome and thanks for the feedback.
