Missing News Reader Icon - Outlook 2003/Windows XP

Randy Graves

Thank you for your help! I recently installed Office 2003
w/Outlook 2003. I want to use the News Reader feature of
Outlook 2003 and followed the Help steps to add the News
ICON to the "Go" menu. At first it worked, but upon
reboot the News Icon is missing from the "Go" menu and is
also missing from the "Custom Add Icon's" menu. I now
cannot find anyway to activate the news reader from
Outlook.

I have removed and re-installed both Outlook and the full
Office 2003, this did not return the missing icon. I
created an additional Windows XP User and logging on
under this new users I experienced the same thing. ie.
You can add the News icon onec and then when coming back
into Outlook the News Icon is missing from the Go menu
and is not available to from the Customization list to
add back into the menu.

Your help is appreciated!
Thank You,
Randy Graves

Thank You! This was just what I needed and gave me the
steps to solve my problem.

The problem seems to occur when you have both Outlook
2003 and Outlook Express installed and have both
configured as as News Readers. (I was migrating from
Outlook Express to Outlook 2003).

It took a bit of playing with the Application defaults in
Internet Explorer, but doing so returned the missing News
Icon to Outlook 2003.

As I recall; the final solution was to have I.E use
Outlook Express as the default News Reader and un-check
the boxes that keep coming up as you move between
programs asking if you want to switch/assign a particular
program as the default News Reader.

My guess is that if I had un-installed, or not had
installed, Outlook Express then I would not have
experienced this problem.

Thanks So Much for your help!
Sincerely,
Randy Graves
