missing resources... ODBC SQL Server Driver error

Season's Greetings,

The project manager of a checked-out enterprise project recently encountered
the Microsoft Project error:[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL
Server]Disallowed implicit conversion from data type datetime to date type
decimal, table 'ProjectServer.dbo.MSP_RESOURCES_PROJ_WRITEVIEW',column
'RES-OVT-COST'. Use the CONVERT function to run this query. After selecting
'OK', the project was saved and then closed. When the project was
checked-out again, ALL the resources were missing...!!

The project has in excess of 3200 line items, has been executing for 6
months, is 3 weeks from completion and has approx 40 resources. In terms of
troubleshooting, the project manager's ODBC driver is at the appropriate
version level. The SQL Server DBA found nothing in the logs that suggested
any db problems and a CHECKDB yielded 0 problems in the db. We are unable to
duplicate the problem (tested on 2 desktop configurations). So... the
project manager has re-Built Team from Enterprise and established assignments
for the outstanding work...

Stating the obvious - we are concerned about the stability/integrity of the
project. On the upside, hours have been accepted and (apparently
successfully) updated against the project. No other problems have been
reported associated with any of the other enterprise projects...should we be
concerned about the stability of our server environment?...advice is welcomed!

Thank you

Jay

Two major concerns:

1) Your service pack level should be 2 on the client and 2a on the server
2) You should be using Project Professional 2003

This is the most stable environment available.

Gary,

As a continuation of last week's discussion thread...

We are evaluating product upgrade path options (e.g. Project Server 2003 or
Project Server 2007). Although Project Server 2007 is GA (generally
available), consensus seems to suggest that Project Server 2007 is not "ready
for prime time", regardless of service pack availability. I appreciate and
look forward to your feedback.

Thank you,
Jay

That's a judgement call, and not a decision that I'd be glib enough to make
as a generality. Your next step should be to fully stabilize your 2003
environment before concerning yourself with a migration.
