Missing Shared Border

B

Bruce

Good Afternoon:
I have been using FP 2000 for years and have had very few problems
updating, until today. I just added a couple of pages and now the top shared
border is not fully visible. I use the publish web button and not FTP.
Although when I talked with my host they said the FTP was turned on so they
turned it off, but no change. Some people have suggested using file manager
to delete the shared boarders file and then republish. The website is
www.bellmachineryltd.com . Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Regards,
Bruce

Hi Bruce,

You shouldn't need to use File Manager on the server to view your shared
border folder.

In FPage go to TOOLS>WEBSETTINGS>ADVANCED and TICK 'Show hidden files and
folders' and then OK

This should result in the shared border folder showing in your FPage
directory. It will be called '_borders'

You can see the same folder on the server in your FPage 'publishing' window
- if you open your site on the server with FPage and do the same thing.

This way you can easily check if the page you are trying to load into your
top shared border actually exists.

If it is there and OK,
1/ check that your pages actually are ticked to show the shared border
2/ have the host reset FPage Extensions

Obvious stuff I know - but I hope it helps!

Regards
Steve

Shared borders and Include Pages are design time tools w/ the content (inside the <BODY> tags) of the Shared Border or Include page
"embedded" or included as html in your pages when you save any of the file(s) using them (or save the borders / include pages
themselves)

FP converts your page(s) to a series of tables to include the Shared borders, (which are really just a special case of Include
pages)
But FP can not build those tables if either your shared border page content or main page content has illegal html or broken tag
pairs
- usually due to missing </body></html> tags, or unmatched table / cell tags (unclosed table / cell tags), or some other unclosed
html block element

If you can see them using File Preview in Browser they will publish in as part of your pages

Open http://www.bellmachineryltd.com in FrontPage and run
Tools->Recalculate Hyperlinks

The top border is displaying, but the images for the banner and link
buttons are not fully compiled - this happens in the Publishing stage
"Processing web updates" after all the files have been uploaded. This
step sometimes fails with an error message relating to server time out
or FrontPage failing to parse a message sent by the server.
If Recalculate Hyperlinks fails, then ask your host to repair the
extensions.
