missing Windows Installer patch files (.MSP files) - now what?

Patch files (.MSP files) are missing and
I can't apply Office updates or uninstall old versions of
office. Of course, my office installation CD came from
the university so I can not access free email support
through MS.

Any advice?

Brian: Did you get any solutions? I'm trying to reinstall Office XP. I
keep getting the message about "This patch package could not be opened..."
(with the Windows Installer window) Do you know how to fix the windows
installer with Windows 98 se?
