Missing Word Doc's

I'm working on a masters paper and all of a sudden after
12 hours of typing I take a break and when I come back
the word files are not on my floppy nor can I find any
trace of them on my hard drive. When I do a search for
the file names a shortcup icon pops up, but when I click
on it this error occurs

"Item that shortcut refers to has been changed or removed"

Please if anyone knows where I can find my work I'd love
you forever!!!

If you're saving directly to a floppy, you can count on losing files.

Sorry, but I don't think you'll like the answer. NEVER work with floppy
disks. Always open and save from/to your hard drive. Then COPY the file
to/from a floppy. Floppies are the prehistoric remnants of a bygone era: the
technology has not be upgraded for at least 12 years or more and you should
never rely on them as your only means of storage.
