Mistake from Basic Edition to Professional Edition 2003 Upgrade

Shelly

I asked the retailer before to buy the Microsoft Pofessional Edition 2003
Upgrade if it works from Basic Edition 2003 and he said yes...so when I tried
to install it, it did not work..because it's not compatible...I couldn't
return it because it supposed to be within 20 days (return policy)...I need
your advice ...I want to buy a Full Version software but I don't know which
one? to use the MPE2003 Upgrade because if I try to sell it they won't give
me the price I paid for it since the box was already opened. Thanks a lot for
your time to answer my inquiry.

Going from any edition of Office 2003 to another edition of Office 2003 is
not an upgrade - it's a crossgrade and there are no crossgrade editions.

Are you in North America? If so, visit
http://www.microsoft.com/info/nareturns.htm. You do have to be within 30
days. If I was you, I'd speak with the manager of the place where you bought
it and explain that you were given bad information by the salesperson. It
may not work but then again, it might. You made your purchase based on that
person's advice and they were wrong.

The more critical question is time. If she is outside of 20 days, she's
probably outside of 30.

I think you should complain strongly to the retailer. In fact, I'd probably
cause a scene until they gave me my full money back! They gave you incorrect
information, so they should take responsibility and return the item at the
full price you paid for it regardless of their policy. And then maybe
they'll think twice about saying "Yeah, you can use the upgrade version"
without checking it out. [We used to see this problem all the time in the
PowerPoint group when PowerPoint wasn't part of Office Small Business
Edition. Retail clerks were always selling people the Pro Upgrades of the
same Office edition (same year) and telling them they could use it to add
PPT. You can't.]

You need to purchase the full version of Office Pro. The upgrade version
will not work -- Office Basic Edition 2003 is not an upgrade qualifier for
Office (other editions) 2003.

Buy the least expensive Works version available, which should be 7.0 or 8.0
(should be less than $50, possibly much less.) Install that and then use
your upgrade to Professional. Obviously an extremely inconvenient solution
but possibly the cheapest. Ridiculous this would work but cross-version
won’t.
