modification is not allowed because selection is locked

Is there a question here?

The message in the subject line means one of three things:

- You are running a version of Word that hasn't been activated (activate
it!), or you are running an expired trial version (buy a full version!).

- If the message appeared when you selected text and tried to delete it,
make sure that the selection does not include a content control that is
locked.

- Some sort of document protection has been applied. On the Developer tab,
click Protect Document to display the Restrict Formatting and Editing pane.
Click Stop Protection. If you are seeing this with all new, blank documents,
rename the Normal template (with Word closed).

Had the same issue. My issue was resolved by going to the office button (top
left) under prepare. The "mark as final" icon was highlighted. This is the
old equivalent of read only. If you click on it, the status will change now
allowing you to edit the document.
