Modifing user group rights

When I modify the user group rights to certain areas and then assign a user
to that group, the rights I assigned to that group are not reflected (visual
check boxes) on the user security screen.

Any thoughts?

It is because the permissions are controlled at the Group level rather than
the User level. You only set permissions at the User level if you wish to
set exceptions to the permissions set in the Groups to which the user
belongs. Be very wary about setting permissions at the User level, however,
as it will make your control of Project Server security much more complex.
