Modifying site template in PS2007

S

scubaal

running PS 2007
Created a project webspace using default microsoft template.
Modified the site, adding a few lists and a couple of pages and moving
things around in the design. Set the site language to
English(Australian) so we get proper date display :)
Saved site as template.
loaded template using atsadm and did iisreset.
Selected template in PWA server settings.
Tried to create new workspaces and got an error telling that "the site
is already being used by another project" (it isnt). Knew workspace
*doesnt* show up in workspace list but *has* been created because I
can go to it directly by URL. Hwoever it is *only* available to the
superuser and checking the site permissions, none of the permissions
for the relevant project users have been added as they were when using
the default template. *Only* the SYSTEM user has access to the new
workspace.
Question: Am I using the correct method for modifying the PWA site
template in PS2007? I know this was the method for 2003 - but I am not
sure this is correct for 2007.
Are there any known issues with template that could cause this failure
(to transfer permissions, to show up in list).

thanks
Al.

Hi scubaal,

In 2007 you will need to delete the Project (and workspace) from where you
created the template first before you can use the new template in Project
Server. Try this and you should be fine.
Hope this helps

Thanks for the reply Mark,
In fact it was a different problem - or should I say bug :)

It seems you cant create a template from a site that is being used for
an existing project - or when you try to use it to create a new
workspace you get that confusing error. (that the workspace is already
being used). I am guessing that the site template created is holding
some sort of pointer to the project that you orignally built if for
which confuses everything?

Anyway........

For anyone else that is trying to get this to work:
Create a new site at the top-level of PWA using the default Microsoft
Template - ie DONT connect this site to a project. Modify this
unlinked site and save as a template. From the gallery save it out as
a .stp file and then import again with stsadm - o addtemplate -
filename <file> -title <name> and run iisreset..........
then select that template in server settings, workspace provisioning
under pwa......phew

*Now* you can create project workspaces that use your customised
template...........seems that Microsoft should document this issue a
bit better (or fix it) :)

Al.

PS I have kept my top-level site (called "blank") as a template only I
can see. So we can modify that when we want to adjust the template.
