Install correct drivers for the video adapter. Get them from the adapter
manufacturers web site or the laptop manufacturer.

"Color bit won't go to 256?" If you "updated" drivers, or the hardware
got reset? I can't say why, as the user can do most anything they want
to a PC. It isn't part of Office, but the drivers one supplies to the
operating system that makes it work.
