More crashes than a dodgem

Mac OS 9.2 on iBook 800mHz, Office PowerPoint 2001. 142 slides, fairly
graphic-rich. PP very unstable, crashes all the time with all kinds of
messages re memory, etc. Increased PP memory by a lot (in multiples of
1024), slight improvement. However after last crash PP refuses even to boot
and I'm completely stuck. Will probably have to reinstall Office now. Any
attempt to select and drag text immediately crashed it. Slide show
originated on a PC. Similar problems on OS 9.2 iMac though this hasn't
fatally crashed yet. Any ideas? Thanks!

I'm probably not the first to reply to his own posting! I fixed the crashing
problem by following the destructions (sorry, instructions) at Mactopia's
http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/#MacFAQs (trashing loads of preferences)
and putting up the PP memory to 30MB. Question: how come a 2MB file of 142
slides needs so much memory? Thanks!

That's the reason for my earlier questions. If you have JPG images in the
PPT file, they're highly compressed but must be decompressed into memory for
playback. If you know the pixel size of the images, we can get a rough idea
of the memory hit.
