as suggested by many I disabled speech recognition and cleaned up .tmp
files. No effect. Now word would never quit cleanly... always needs a
force quit.
I just ran a full system scan for viruses, with a 9.15.04 package from
Symantec, and istalled all security packages available from Mircosoft.
No viruses.
