Experiment with a relatively small document until you are clear on the
required procedure. It's a bit complicated. You will understand why the
feature was added to newer versions.
This doesn't shrink the pages. It DOES allow you the use of headers or
footers that will permit page numbering on each of the smaller "pages".
Change orientation to landscape mode
Set different margins for right and left pages. One margin should be set
to more than half the width (for 8 1/2 X 11 paper more than 5.50). Right
and left pages should have the wide margin on opposite sides. Which
depends on you goal. For simply putting two pages on a sheet, put the
wide margin on the right side of odd pages and left side of even pages.
If making booklets you will want the wide margin on the left side of odd
pages. There are additional complications if you are making booklets.
Print only Odd numbered pages. You only want to print half the Odd pages
if you are making booklets.
Put paper back into printer.
Depending on how your printer stacks its output you MIGHT need to
reverse the print order. This requirement is more common with ink jet
printers.
Print the Even numbered pages.
If you are making booklets you will need to flip the sheets over to
print the remaining pages in a similar manner.
Note that the typical office stapler can't place a staple in the center
of booklets made this way. You might be able to locate special oversize
staplers that can. Some of the oversize staplers feature guides that
assist in positioning the staples accurately.
