More than 3 outcomes (formats) with conditional formatting

I think I know the answer to this already (i.e., use
worksheet_change event instead of conditional formatting),
but anyway, I'd like to have a groups of cells be colored
up to 8 different ways based on 8 different conditions.
Is there any way (other than the one mentioned above) to
do this with conditional formatting?

part one, yes (yes, you're correct, use an Event macro)
part two, no (no, you can't use Conditional Formatting)
