MOSS and PS 2007

Hi,

Why do I need a separate index server for MOSS if all of the
indexing/crawling is done on SQL server?

Also, what are recommendation on installing MOSS on the same server as PS
2007 in a server farm? My client doesn't want to purhase another server for
MOSS. This is a production environment with about 2000 users.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Indexes are stored as flat files not in SQL, hence the requirement for a
seperate server.

Having PS and MOSS on the same physical box is technically possible and
whether you need to seperate them out depends on a multitude of factors (ie
concurrent users, size/volume of projects, size/number of documents, search
scopes etc), not just the number of users.

Given that SharePoint is highly scalable, you could start with one server
and then add additional servers/split services as required.

It's worthy to note that each server in a MOSS/WSS farm requires a PS
license\install if PS is being used within the farm.
