Mouse function failure - 2007 ms word SP1

G

grenada49

after 12/12/07 2007 microsoft office suite service pack 1 (sp1) auto update -
my previously and perfectly functioning mouse will not capture text in word
2007. Working fine in Outlook and excel and publisher and powerpoint. left
button works fine on the word toolbars and nav buttons but is absolutely
useless in the body of any word document. Only way to move in the document is
with arrows and no cut /pasting using mouse. Any one else have this problem
and ideas for a fix?

I unfortunately don't have an answer but I have the same problem. Just
thought misery would enjoy some company.

I just did a check and noticed that I don't have SP1 installed, so the
problem is not SP1. It must have been an earlier update that Microsoft pushed
because I have not choosen optional updates. If anyone knows the specific
update that is causing this problem I would appreciate it so I can remove it
since I would rather live with the bug that was patched than lose my mouse.

Thanks.

Mine works fine with Word 2007 SP-1 using a Microsoft wireless mouse with
mouse software version 6.10.156.0. If your mouse software is current,
suggest you try Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Microsoft Office 2007,
Change and then Repair. You will likely need your installation CD.

Thanks, at least some one else has experienced similar problem. Interesting
that your casualty is without the SP1. I've had a dozen or so Defender
Updates and several Vista Security Update candidates as well. Will swap mouse
out and see if that fixes the problem then try the office reinstall repair
with CD. If something works, will post it. Best, Lee

Hi Jack,

If you start Word 2007 in Office safe mode (hold ctrl key when clicking on the shortcut) does the mouse work again? If so, there
are a couple of Add-ins that have been known to cause problems including LaserFiche and Paperport.

If you have a 'universal scroll' setting for your mouse in the control panel or in the mouse software that came with the mouse try
disabling that setting.

If you have a Logitech mouse, please check their site for an updated driver and/or use the Windows generic MS mouse driver as a test
to see if that fixes the problem.

Hi Bob, Good tip. I tried the safe mode and it does work in safe mode. Don't
have the add-ins you mention but will check recent ones. Thanks for the lead.

Don,

Thanks for the idea. Office diagostics are coming back clean and had this
one pegged as one to try after after exhausting the update and mouse swap.

I have the exact same problem. I have swapped my mouse out for a Microsoft
brand mouse, and I still have the same problem. Booting in safe mode fixes
it, but I still don't know what the problem is. I think it has something to
do with an Office update.

Yes, the mouse does work in safe mode. The add-ins I have are Adobe
Contribute, Acrobat PDF Maker and Microsoft Business Contact Manager for
Outlook.

I'm using the touchpad on my Acer laptop as well, no external mouse.

The addins have been here since I originally installed Office 6 months ago
and this mouse problem has only surfaced a short time ago.

I still suspect it's an update Microsoft pushed through either for Vista or
for Office. This problem only affects Word.

Thanks.

As an added bonus I've also noticed that Word never closes properly anymore.
Clicking "X" or "Close" triggers an error and on the last error a diagnostic
ran and came up clean. It directed me to Microsoft's site and one of the
suggestions is:

"The Update Diagnostic was unable to run because it requires a file that you
have chosen not to download. To give Microsoft Office permission to download
this file, do one of the following in one of these 2007 Office release
programs:"

But the problem is that the instructions tell me to go to Word Options to
make a change which is fine except the mouse problem stops me once I'm in
Word Options. And when I'm in safe mode the "Trust Center" is not an option I
can select.

I hope the answer is not a re-install since if this is an update Microsoft
pushed through then the problem will resurface and I really don't have time
to play that little game.

Thanks.

I finally got microsoft on the phone this morning and the tech knew the
problem and quickly fixed it. Here is his email summary of what he did:

(e-mail address removed)

The reason for this was an automatic update for Microsoft Office Word 2007
on a Windows Vista-based computer we tried to Delete
under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data and were
able to resolve the issue.
Below are the links that you may find helpful in resolving the issue on your
own.
====================================================================
http://support.microsoft.com/940791

We went to run & typed regedit then found
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data
and deleted Data file. That immediately fixed the problem.

I have not checked out 94071 but tech said this addresses the issue. Good
luck and hope this helps you and anyone else following this thread.

Jack,

Had not mentioned the problem with not closing properly but had that as
well. I just replied to Corey on this but the fix that the microsoft tech
worked through with took care of both the mouse text capture as well as the
freezing up during word shutdown. I am now a full up round with everything
working. Good luck. Lee German

Deleting Data worked for me too. I am not even using Word 2007. I am
using 2003 (11.6568.6568) SP2. I do not have
.....\Office\12.0 but I did have ....\Office\11.0 and that's where I
deleted the group from.

So it seems the problem also occurs in previous releases.

Thanks to all for this string. I too just suffered from the auto update to
Word 2007 for Vista, and lost my mouse. this fix restored funtionality and
also improved my normal.dotx template, which had a zero top margin. Now
fixed!

I, too, have had this exact problem since the computer automatically
installed updates yesterday. How do I get rid of the updates? It's not the
Service Pack 1, because I installed that after it happened, thinking it might
fix it. There were about 6 or 8 other updates that occurred just before that
& they definitely caused the problem.

This is maddening.

What am I deleting? I deleted the file called User Data, but that didn't do
anything, even after reboot. The problem remained. Do I delete the entire
Data folder?
