I found one note on this problem which seems unresolved and may not be
easily solvable.
Problem: It seems an add-in may have disabled mouse-highlighting in
the body of a Word 2003 document. You can use the mouse anywhere
outside of the text-area, but it can not be used to highlight text in
the main text area.
There was one post that was never responded to in ~.docmanagement. It
appears below.
Unfortunately, I am not in a position to get uninstall the software
with the add-in and I can not deactivate the add-in in Word.
