Mouse not responding with Publisher 2000 and 2002

About 2 weeks ago while working on a newsletter, my mouse began to slow and then hung up completely. I had to restart the computer to be able to use it for a while and then the same thing happened again. The problem continues. The mouse works well in other programs and with the desktop. I checked the CPU and found that Publisher is pulling almost all my resources when it is running. Any suggestions? Anyone else have this happen?
