mouse not working in Word & App not responding

I too have found my mouse no longer selects text in Word 2007. I can use the
Shift and arrow keys to highlight text, but not the mouse on my laptop nor
the wireless Logitech one. Even worse, I can only access the Popular choice
in the Word Options in the Office Logo button (formerly Tools-Options), I
can't navigate to look at add-ins, or advanced or any other category. My
mouse works fine in all other apps. Lastly, whenever I close a Word 2007
file, it says Word is not responding and attempts to recover docs--thus
looping itself back to same problem. Norton protection not finding any
viruses or spyware...Any ideas?

OK, I am answering myself now! I found the answer with Terry and then Amy's
post of 10/12/08 about modifying the registry. Why would Microsoft send an
update that causes problems, rather than fixes them? UGH! At least it works
now. Thanks for this forum and the help.

It's probably because you left Word running when the update was installed.
