mouse point changes to paper with bent edge when selecting workshe

Having problems with Excel 2003. It will work fine for awhile then start
acting strange. This started a couple of weeks ago.

If you click on a worksheet tab, the mouse pointer changes. It has a piece
of paper with one edge folded down. Once this happens, we can not get it to
change back. If you scroll out of the excel sheet, this paper turns into a
black circle with a line through it. The only way to get out of excel is to
go into task manager and end task. This brings up a message that you cannot
exit excel. Eventually you do get prompted to end excel as it is not
responding. There is a second issue. If you open excel and click on a cell,
it acts like you are selecting multiple cells and we cannot get out of it.
It acts like the issue with the worksheet tabs. The only way to get excel to
behave normally is to reboot the computer.

This happens in existing excel documents or new ones. We have logged into
the computer using different user profiles and it happens to all users. If
the computer is rebooted before someone new logs in, then it works fine.

I've done a detect and repair back to defaults and it will happen again
eventually. It doesn't happen every day.

Are there any settings in excel that we can try? What does the mouse
pointer with the piece of paper with one edge folded down mean? Is there a
reference available for what the mouse pointer can change to?

If we can't figure this out, we will need to get a different computer for
the person having the problem.
