Mouse won't work in XP after creating a document from a template

Since our organisation rolled out new machines running Windows XP and Office XP we have had several instances of users opening a new document from a template (which had a user form for some input) and then the mouse will not work. Can still use tab keys, arrow keys. Cannot use mouse in any other document that was open before the creation of this document. Workaround is to close out of Word which fixes it for some people but with otherse, opening the document created from the template again causes mouse to not work again
Any ideas please
