PowerPoint can understand a couple of types of movie files. Well, that is
an oversimplification. PowerPoint doesn't understand squat about movies,
but it knows the operating system might, so it asks your operating system to
play them for it.
Now, sometimes the operating system knows which program to ask and sometimes
it has been told lies by nasty softwares that mess things up for playing
movies from the MCI player. The newer versions of PowerPoint are smarter
than the older ones and generally do a better job of requesting this from
your OS. Anyway, this is more than you think you want to know, but less
than you will probably need before this is done.
Ok, back to your movie. You need to capture the movie to a known (by
PowerPoint) movie format (AVI, WMV are usually fairly solid choices). You
will also want to use a common codec (which is the method of compression
within the video file) when converting to a movie file. Now that you have a
movie file on your hard drive, move the movie file to the same folder as the
presentation file and then (within PowerPoint) use the Insert -> Movies and
Sounds ... -> Movie from file to 'insert the movie into the presentation.
You don't, by the way, insert the movie, that is. Movies are always linked
from the presentation never embedded within it, so you will need to keep the
movie file you created in the same folder as the presentation file. Keep
this in mind it you want to show the presentation on another computer.
So, what could go wrong? Ummm... lots. Just because a movie plays on your
machine is no indicator that it will play on any other machine (even one
that appears identical or far superior). You MUST test the movie in the
presentation on the end computer to avoid being embarrassed should it not
work. Nothing will kill a big deal faster than a blank screen at a sales
meeting, so do some testing.
