Don,

That's a bit of a " how long is a piece of string" question.

Most of the video formats that powerpoint likes (mpg, avi) can have a "compression quality" setting applied. the most
compressed (read lower quality) movies can look awful. So it's always a trade off between compression and quality.

Thanks, everyone. I do a lot of work with digital video.
I know the trade offs between compression and quality. I
guess what I really meant to ask is how many (what)
formats can be used with PPT. I will make the judgment as
to which best suits my purposes.

If you go to Insert > Movies and Sounds > Movie from File, the Insert Movie
dialog box has a list of file types at the bottom. You can resize that dialog
box horizontally to see the full list. It's quite extensive.

MPEG1, MPEG2 (but it's not very portable because of codec issues), AVI, WMA,
a bunch of others. If you use Insert/Movie and Sound/Movie From File, you'll
see them listed at the bottom of the dialog box. Just drag the edge of the
dialog to stretch it so you can see all of them.
