Moving and restoring pst files

I have outlook 2003. My pst files are stored in my c:\documents and
settings\ folder. I'd like them to be stored in my e:\data\ folder,
which is where I keep all my stuff. This way, backing up my data folder
would also back up my outlook files. How do I do that?

If I have to restore outlook settings and mail from a backup of previous
pst files, do I just copy those files to my pc or do I need to do
something else?

I would export the .pst to the e:\ directory then Import the .pst from the
same source whenever a restore is necessary.

To backup the .pst in OL2K3:

Select Import and Export from the File menu
Select Export option then click Next
Select .pst format then click Next
Select the Personal Folder level then click Next
Type in the e:\ path down to the .pst file name, set a duplication option
then click Finish

To Restore the .pst in OL2K3:
Select Import and Export from the File menu
Select 'Import from another program or file' option then click Next
Select .pst format then click Next
Browse to .pst on the e:\ directory and open
Select the folder in the backup .pst to import from (typically the top level
- Personal Folders) then click Finish

Hope this helps,
Sandi.

Note that this method is not recommended. Exporting and importing will
lose data. Use the method posted by Roady.

I have a similar problem: I have just added a new computer to my home network
(runningWin XP pro). Installed Office 2003 on the new box, same is on the old
one. I am trying to move .pst file from the old to the new machine. I have
copied it to D:/username/usermailbox/user.pst So far everything is OK
However, Outlook created its own .pst file in C:/documents and
settings/../Outlook. I deleted it to force Outlook to ask for the location,
however Outlook recreates the .pst file in its default location.

Any suggestions?

typical crappy Microsoft philosophy: the computer is supposed to be
smarter than the user...

To access your pst-file;
File-> Open-> Outlook Data File...

To set it as the default delivery location;
Tools-> E-mail Accounts...-> button Next-> use the dropdownlist below

Ouch, that means we are being controlled by computers instead of the other
way around. I do not like that philosophy... :-S

I must have mixed something up. There are two 'personal folders' visible in
Outlook main, the second is the one I have moved to D:/.... I assume the
first is the one Outlook had created in C:. There are also two entries in the
drop down menu in Tools->E-mail accounts->deliver new mail to the following
location. Both named Personal folders. Two new questions: i. how to find out
which is which (as there is no visible way to get their properties), and ii.
how to remove the obsolete?

Thanks Roady for your good advises

BAD advice. Export/import can and does miss some of the data in the PST.

Change the delivery location to the PST on drive D and stop/restart Outlook.
You'll then be able to close the PST in the Windows profile and delete it
the next time Outlook is closed.
