Moving files to CD

Is there a way to move messages to CD without first copying
and/or pasting to a Word/Text Document I have so many I
need to move, this sure would create so many unnecessary temporary
files. PS...I don't want to Archive...I want to get them off my disc.

Archive, then copy the archive pst file to CD. Delete the original archive
pst.

Why dont you want to Archive?
You could Archive then burn that Archive file to disk
If you want to remove msgs due to low disk space, then time to look at
replacing your HD or adding a second, removing msgs will not result in any
significant increase in disk space

May sound like a stupid question, but can the messages be retrieved
"individually" from the CD?

No
You have to move any pst back to your HD, then reset the read only attribute
before opening the pst within Outlook
Still wondering why you want to do this?

I don't want to put them on CD if I can't read them...but I had another
problem. Many of the messages I wanted to Archive were 2002 or
earlier. I now have OUtlook 2003 which will not open (I found out)
archived messages of an earlier date. So, I imported the files back
to a personal file folder in Outlook.

Now another question. If I archive messages prior to 2003, how can
I change my 2003 Outlook Data File settings from Personal Folders File
....to Personal Folders File (97-2002) in order to open them?

Of vcourse it will if you used the Outlook Archive function - all that does
is create a pst file with the archived items in which ANY version of Outlook
can open. Presumably you did this "archiving" outside of the Outlook
Archiving function?

Easy. No need to change anything. Just do File-Open-Outlook Data File from
within Outlook.

Open the CD drive in Windows Explorer and drag the messages from Outlook to
the Explorer window. Delete the messages in Outlook. Close Outlook. Burn
the CD.

Whether you put them on the CD as individual MSG files or keep them in a
PST, you'll still need to use Outlook to see them and you may still need to
place them back on your hard drive and remove the read-only attribute first,
but I can't test this right now with MSG files. You can save messages in
other formats, like Plain Text, which will be readable without Outlook and
directly from the CD, but the format won't match that of the original
message. I think Gordon and DL are giving good advice. Create a new PST,
move to it the data you want to store for safe-keeping, close the PST in
Outlook, close Outlook, then burn the PST to CD.

Doesn't sound as though that does any more than the built-in Archiving

You are doing somethin wrong, and you were incorrectly informed
Outlook 2003 or 2007 can open any pst created by an earlier version of
Outlook.
Assuming you have no Archive open within Outlook - see folders Tree View -
what exactly happens if, within Outlook you; File>Open>Data File.....browse
to and select your archive.?

You need to check what archive file your current arrchive options are set to
archive to, then if that archive file isnt open within Outlook, open it.
Then in Properties of the archive>Advanced see whether it states for format
97 -2002, or simply outlook personal folders, in which case it is a unicode
(2003/2007 format)
If it does then reset your archive options to point to a 'newname' archive
file, just input you prefered name, the archive will be created in the
default format for 2003, which is unicode, next time it runs
