I built a new computer and I didn't want to reload all my
software so I found on the internet a way to do this.
Move the hard drive to the new system.
Insert the Windows XP disk.
During the initial boot, boot from the CD.
After the XP install does the initial scan of the system
select the "Repair" option - instead of the new install.
XP will rebuild the necessary OS componets around your
existing applications and data.
Windows XP tracks the hardware associated with the
machine it is loaded on. If there are major changes, the
XP activation window will appear. You must reactivate
Windows.
It appears that MS applications also track these changes.
I had to reactivate Office XP, Visio and MS Project. I'm
not sure how it happened but the files that keep track of
the updates for these application (Office XP, Visio and
MS Project) got corrupted. I couldn't activate or
uninstall these applications.
(Other non-MS applications worked fine but then no other
applications are so tightly integrated into the OS.)
I was directed to this program (Windows Installer Clean
Up) which removed the files so the products could be
reinstalled.

This worked great. I reinstalled the products in the same
locations (default locations). Very little data needed to
be (re)copied to the hard drive to restore the
applications. I did need to reactivate the products
afterwards.
