Moving messages to PST files locks up Outlook

USing Outlook 2002. Sometimes when moving a simple message to PST file the hard disk activity goes up and Outlook stops responding. Enough system hardware available as well. System requires several restarts and have also used scanpst.exe. After several system restarts the problem seems to dissapear. Any suggestions/advice.
