Moving objects, text boxes, graphics, etc.

CJBookie

I don't know why things have changed, but I am now not able to easily move
text boxes, objects, or graphics. This started in Word (Office 2000 Pro
bundle) with text boxes. I was told to try holding down the control key and
the left mouse key after clicking on the text box. That worked for a while.
Now, that doesn't work in Word or Publisher. I also am not able to move
objects/graphics in either. Seems like the program wants to move thing in
preset increments even if I try the control key.
I need a fix ASAP as I use these for work for creating flyers, brochures,
etc. Any suggestions/ideas?

Don't know about Word, but you certainly don't have to hold the control key to move a
text box, image or anything else in Publisher.

Um, I do now! Today, I gave up trying to make a flyer in Word, and switched
to Publisher. It will not let me move something easily without holding the
control key down, and even then, I have trouble getting the graphic and text
boxes exactly where I want them. I can't figure out WHY this has happened!
Is the program going corrupt? I keep it updated (scheduled weekly).

I'm not a Publisher user, but I know that the "snap" feature in PowerPoint
sometimes makes it difficult to place things where you want. Does turning it
off in Publisher help you? To find the "snaps" in Publisher, go to
Arrange|Snap.

In Word, it's on the Drawing toolbar, which you may have to turn on
(View|Toolbars|Drawing). Depending on which version of Word you're using
(usually helpful if you mention it), it will be under Draw|Grid or Draw|Snap
on that Drawing toolbar.

The "snap" is on by default in Publisher for rulers and guides, it has to be manually
turned on for "snap to" objects. I think a detect and repair is what the poster
needs.

Thanks, Echo! That worked, at least for the graphics/pictures/text boxes. I
haven't tried it for tabs (having the same problem with them, too - can't
place them where I want them, etc.), but will later today. Something so
simple!!!

I turned the "snap" off in Word and now things are back the way I'm used to!
Woohoo!

"I think a detect and repair is what the poster needs." Do you mean an
antivirus/antispam? I run both frequently on my computer. Boss is notorious
for opening junk e-mails and clicking on things she shouldn't, thereby
causing problems. Or, do you mean a detect and repair for the Office
program? Not sure I know how to do that, but I'm certainly willing to learn.
Should I just do a "re-install"?

Detect and Repair can be found under Help|Detect and Repair. It repairs
registry entries and things like that, and can sometimes help if Office
programs are doing strange things.

Since turning off Snap worked for you, you don't need to run Detect and
Repair.

Hold down the Ctrl button on your keyboard while you drag the tabs around on
the ruler. That will give you more control.
