mp3s sound bad in PPT 2003

Anyone else experience this? VBR mp3s don't play through
their entirety - ppt thinks they are shorter than they
are, but media player plays 'em fine. Normal CBR mp3s
play, but the decompression artifacts (terrible garbled
sound) make them unlistenable! Tried encoding using
various software, same result. .wav works fine WTF! I
was hopiong to make a single embedded narration / cross
platform presentation... Any suggestions?

Have you tested playing them in the MCI player (which PPT uses)?
