.mpd files and external predecessors

Hi there.
We save our mpp files as mpd so that we can link to the mpd via Access and
generate some crosstab reports of the summary tasks.

We need to link to external predecessors. We are trying to do this from one
mpd to another mpd and we get a "wrong file type" error message.

When these files were mpp format the linking was not a problem.

Can we not link a task to an external predecessor from one mpd to another?

Thanks in advance!
Marty

After days of research and hitting the wall, with Jack's help, I'm going to
answer my own post, JUST in case someone else is trying to solve this same
issue.
First of all, Project Server would completely solve it.
-However if you can't go there yet, you can save multiple projects into one
mpd file by doing this...
from the .mpp file, save as .mpd file type (give the mpd a name, AND give
the Project a name - it will default to the mpp filename but you can change
it.
Close.
From the second Project's mpp file, save as into the same mpd that you just
created.
-To create external predecessors within the mpd file...
Open the mpd file and one of the projects.
From the File menu open the other project.
Use the Window menu to arrange both projects within the Project window
Create your external links as you would normally have.

And Hooty hoo! It's all in one database.
Thanks Jack!
